John E. Carlstrom is the Subramanyan Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. He has served as the director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, and he is currently chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. His research focuses on observational cosmology through measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). He leads the 10m South Pole Telescope project and is a co-spokeperson of the CMB-S4 science collaboration. He is working on the development of the joint DOE and NSF CMB-S4 construction project, which is expected to be reviewed by the 2020 Decadal Survey.
